H1N1 Flu Information

The pandemic H1N1 influenza virus (swine flu) has seen a significant surge in the U.S., and cases are now widespread in more than 36 states, raising public concerns. Public health agencies are monitoring the situation and Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center has experience in handling influenza cases. Currently, a new hospital visitation policy is in effect to safeguard the health of our patients, visitors and staff.

If you are seeking information about this disease, the state’s Department of Human Services has set up an excellent resource to answer your questions and provide information—please call the State of Oregon H1N1 Hotline at 1-800-978-3040. This recorded message offers advice in both English and Spanish, with an option to speak with a health information specialist. The DHS has also posted information online regarding influenza-related actions at www.flu.oregon. The Centers for Disease Control also provide an excellent online resource for information about H1N1 at www.cdc.gov, updating the site on a daily basis.

There are several simple rules everyone should follow to prevent the spread of contagious diseases:

  • Wash your hands often, using soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also helpful.
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, using the inside of your elbow or a disposable tissue.
  • See your doctor if you are sick, but stay home from work or school and avoid exposing other people.
